Culture and History
The Schlangenturm is a restored historic defensive tower and part of Stromberg’s former fortifications. The Alte Stromburg is a medieval castle complex dating from the 11th and 12th centuries; it was excavated in the 1980s by Mainz archaeological heritage authorities. Stromburg is first documented in written sources in 1242.
The Stromberg Local History Museum displays fragments from Roman excavations, medieval relics, maps, deeds and documents from the 16th to the 20th century. Local history is presented in rooms arranged by theme. Among the finds from the Alte Stromburg on display at the local history museum in Stromberg is an almost completely preserved mosaic.
Near Stromberg, Gollenfels Castle is described as having probably been built in the 12th century on the foundations of an old Roman fortification; this fortification guarded a road from Mainz to Trier.
Things to Do
The Stromberg Knights’ Tour is a castle-themed circular trail connecting three castles. The route uses storytelling, content accessed via QR code and child-oriented treasure-hunt figures that lead towards a treasure. The main circular route is 5.8 km long, while the family loop is 3.2 km. Access is from the hiking car park at Stromburg or from the town centre.
The Hildegard of Bingen Pilgrimage Route uses Stromberg as the endpoint of one stage and the starting point of the next.
Food and Drink
Bistro Mistral is located in the Panoramabad Stromberg complex and offers views of the valley, as well as seating on the terrace and indoors. It has a separate entrance and is also open to guests who do not use the swimming pool. German and Croatian specialities are served.
