Waldböckelheim lies north of the Nahe in the Rhenish Slate Mountains. The Rüdesheim holiday region stretches from the Nahe to the Soonwald and is located in the Soonwald-Nahe Nature Park. Culture and History

Waldböckelheim’s attractions include the Protestant Mountain Church, built in the Neo-Gothic style from 1863 to 1867, the Catholic parish church of St. Bartholomew, the former Electoral Mainz factor’s office with a Renaissance oriel, and Marienpforter Hof. The latter is associated with a Wilhelmite monastery first mentioned in 1266.

The Hildegard Herb Garden in Waldböckelheim is a stop on the Hildegard of Bingen Pilgrimage Trail and provides information about medicinal herbs and medieval herbal medicine. The pilgrimage trail passes through Waldböckelheim: a marker at the old tithe barn refers to Hildegard, while meditation panels are located at the Protestant Mountain Church and at St. Bartholomew’s Church. The route continues towards the Soonwald and forms part of a stage through Burgsponheim and Sponheim.

Landscape and Trails

The Rüdesheim holiday region has more than 277 km of newly signposted hiking trails as well as numerous local circular routes. The Waldböckelheim circular trail “Naheblick” is a moderately difficult hiking trail measuring 6.0 km. It runs through vineyards and forests, with views of the Nahe Valley, and offers vistas of Schloßböckelheim and its castle ruins. The route reaches the Heimberg, which consists of volcanic rock and is largely a nature reserve.

The Heimberg Tour is Route 7 in the Rüdesheim Association’s Nordic Walking Park and is marked with red signs. It connects vineyards, meadows and views across the Nahe. The circular trail “In Leo’s Footsteps” is approximately 12 km long and leads around the Welschberg before returning to Waldböckelheim. The “In Leo’s Footsteps” route offers views towards the Ellerbach Valley, Sponheim Monastery and Rotenfels.

Wine and Regional Cuisine

Waldböckelheim is a wine-growing community. The Waldböckelheim Wine Trail is a 3.0 km circular route through the vineyards to sensory benches on the Welschberg. Its starting point is at the Weintor in the industrial area, where there is a car park. There are good bus connections to Waldböckelheim for the trail.

Weinhaus Hehner-Kiltz focuses on regional products, including Ingelheim asparagus, game from the Hunsrück and chanterelle mushrooms from the Soonwald. Waldböckelheim gingerbread is a locally associated speciality, while the Beckelumer carnival procession is a locally associated cultural tradition. Weinhaus Hehner-Kiltz is described as one of the oldest inns in the Nahe region; its origins date back to 1790. Wine menus are recommended there, featuring wines from its own 18-hectare winery.
