Montfort Castle Ruins can be visited free of charge. A small museum at the castle ruins displays archaeological finds from the ruins. V. regularly organises festivals at the ruins.

History

Montfort Castle was built around 1240 and destroyed in 1456. It is located on a 280-metre-high wooded hill between Hallgarten and Duchroth. Hallgarten was first mentioned in 1391 under the name “Hargarten”.

The Catholic church in Hallgarten is a choir-tower church made of red sandstone blocks and was built in 1937/38. The Protestant church is a neo-Romanesque sandstone-block building from 1927. The former school with a teacher’s residence is a sandstone-block building dating from 1901.

Romans stopped at Dreiweiherhof. Napoleonic troops passed through Dreiweiherhof; Schinderhannes used one of his hiding places there.

Wine

Hallgarten is home to the family-run Grünewald Winery, a wine-growing business dating from 1864. It cultivates 5 hectares of vineyards.
