Roxheim: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Roxheim combines a long wine-growing tradition with distinctive churches, vineyards and paths through the Naheland region. A deed of gift for Fulda Abbey from the year 773 mentions vineyards; this entry is associated with Roxheim’s wine-growing tradition.

Wine

The steep Roxheim vineyards Roxheimer Höllenpfad and Roxheimer Birkenberg are associated with fine-grained Upper Rotliegend sandstone. Weingut Merz cultivates around 7 hectares of vineyards in Roxheim, the neighbouring municipalities and Bad Kreuznach. At Weingut Merz’s NAHE tasting room, tastings are offered from the various vineyards around Roxheim.

The Rüdesheim collective municipality also leads visitors into the region’s wine culture: wineries offer wine taverns and vinotheques for breaks and wine tastings. Weingut Heil promotes a culinary October speciality called Heil’sche Spansau, served with homemade filled potatoes, salad and Federweißer.

The Roxheim “Roxl” Wine Adventure Trail is an approximately 4.4-kilometre-long, easy wine trail and takes about 1 hour 14 minutes. It offers impressions of the vineyard season, information about wine, views and places to linger.

Culture and History

Roxheim’s listed heritage includes the Protestant parish church with a chancel tower dating from around 1300 and a Baroque nave from 1738, as well as the neo-Romanesque Catholic parish church of St Sebastian, built between 1869 and 1871.

The Protestant church in its present form dates from 1736 and served as a simultaneous church for both denominations until 1869. Its chancel tower forms the end of the church and does not contain the entrance. Three bells hang in the church tower and also strike the hours. The historic Roxheim rectory belongs to the church ensemble and likewise dates from 1738.

Getting Around

At the edge of the Roxheim vineyards, a wayside cross served for years as a resting point for hikers and cyclists. A vineyard hut at the meeting point of the vineyards of St Katharinen, Mandel and Roxheim provides another public place to rest for walkers and cyclists.

The Rüdesheim collective municipality provides signposted hiking trails and cycling routes on which historic villages and buildings can be explored. Local circular routes lead through nature, vineyards and villages. The Nahe Cycle Route runs for approximately 135 kilometres from its source in Saarland to its mouth near Bingen and passes through the wider regional area.

Surroundings

In Bad Kreuznach, the Bridge Houses are half-timbered buildings standing on the pillars of the old Nahe Bridge; they were built from 1480 onwards. The Salinental between Bad Kreuznach and Bad Münster forms a historic cultural landscape with graduation works 1.1 kilometres long and nine metres high, as well as an open-air inhalatorium.
