Culture and History

The castle was built by Frederick III between 1238 and around 1250. Its four corner towers are round, and the castle complex is based on French models from the Île-de-France. The loopholes are described as the earliest in the German-speaking region.

St. Nicholas Church dates back to a castle chapel built in the 13th century. Inside are a crucifix, a statue of the Madonna, and figures of the apostles dating from the late 15th century. The Upper Gate is the only surviving gate of the medieval wall that enclosed the outer castle area and the town.

The market square features a market fountain and a lion bearing the coat of arms of the Prince-Bishops of Worms from 1782.
