Bissersheim: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Bissersheim is a wine-growing village in the Palatinate with more than 1,200 years of winemaking tradition. It is located in the Eckbach Valley near the German Wine Route; vineyards surround the village, and paths for hiking and cycling run through the surrounding area. Bissersheim has 150 hectares of vineyards.

History

Bissersheim was first recorded in 774 under the name Bizziricheshaim. A moated castle built by the Counts of Leiningen in the 13th century has not survived. The village is home to historic vintners’ houses from the 17th and 18th centuries. The Protestant church was first mentioned in 1151 as belonging to Höningen Abbey. The Bruchmühle also has a long history: it was first mentioned in 1583.

Culture

The Protestant church has a Baroque nave with round-arched windows that reflect the influence of the Counts of Leiningen. The ground floor of a medieval tower with a rib vault resting on corbels has also been preserved.

The Haldmühle is a protected cultural monument. Its main building dates from 1739 and is used as an event venue. The Bruchmühle can be viewed from the outside and serves as a residential building and guesthouse.

Nature

The 24.5-kilometre Eckbach Mill Hiking Trail includes Bissersheim as one of its stops. It follows the Eckbach through meadows, forests, orchards and wine-growing areas. Hiking, cycling, jogging and walks are promoted around Bissersheim; the routes cross the vineyards. The options mentioned include the Kraut und Rüben Hiking Trail, the Eckbach Mill Hiking Trail and the Leininger Castles Trail.

Wine

Several wineries in Bissersheim invite visitors to wine tastings. Weingut Tobias Mussler continues a family winemaking tradition dating back to 1831. The Tobias Mussler Vinothek offers new wine creations in a space dedicated to wine.
