The ending “-rath” is associated with the period of the great clearances from the 10th to the 14th century. The name Winnerath is connected with Winnenrode, interpreted as “the clearing of Wino or Winne”.

The Wackelsloch Chapel near Winnerath was completed after 15 years of work. It contains a depiction of Saint Francis of Assisi with three birds, referring to the traditional sermon to the birds. The chapel is intended as a stopping point for people who wish to enjoy the view over the valley and woodland landscape.
