History

The present-day Church of St. Lucia reflects several centuries of local history. Its foundation stone was laid on 8 May 1720. A chapel whose patrons were Odilia and Lucia had already been mentioned in Rech in 1499. The church itself was built from local quarry stone and has a hall layout with a choir closed on three sides.

Inside, the stained-glass windows date from 1967 to 1970, while the high altar dates back to the 18th century. Among the saints depicted in the church windows is Saint Urban, the patron saint of winegrowers and wine.

Culture

The tradition of the Lucia Market dates back to a pilgrimage privilege granted in 1510 and was revived in 1990. The market takes place on the second weekend of Advent. The Rech Winegrowers’ Festival has been celebrated since 1964 and traditionally takes place on the third weekend of September.

A guided tour lasting approximately 90 minutes combines local history, current events, and insights into winegrowing.

Nature

Local hiking trails include the Red Wine Trail and the Saffenburg Circuit. The Red Wine Trail leads through vineyards and reaches the Recher Herrenberg vineyard site. A walk starting from Rech offers views of Rech, the ruins of Saffenburg, and the Recher Herrenberg and Recher Blume vineyard sites. There are railway stations along the Red Wine Trail.

Cuisine

The range of wines in Rech includes Spätburgunder, Riesling, and sparkling wine. Many wineries offer direct sales and wine tastings on site. Restaurants and inns serve local and international dishes. Rech also has 26 motorhome pitches near the Ahr.
