Mayschoß: Holiday apartments and holiday homes
Mayschoß lies amid vineyards at the foot of the Saffenburg castle ruins, while the adjacent Red Wine Hiking Trail offers views over the town. Here, wine landscapes, historic traces and regional culinary delights come together in many different facets within a small area.
Trails and landscape
The Altenahr–Mayschoß section of the Red Wine Hiking Trail is a moderately difficult route of approximately 4 km. From the Ümerich viewpoint, the view extends over Mayschoß, Are Castle and the Ahr Valley. The path leading there has rocky sections and requires sure-footedness and sturdy footwear.
The Ahr Cycle Path, the Red Wine Hiking Trail and the Eifelsteig trail pass directly by Mayschoß. The Große Saffenburgrunde route includes viewpoints at Saffenburg, Schwedenkopf, Ümerich and Mohrenkopf. The Saffenburg castle plateau overlooks Mayschoß, the Ahr loop, steep vineyard terraces and the Mönchberg vineyard site. From Mayschoß railway station, Saffenburg can be reached via the Ahrtalweg A1.
The panorama at Saffenburg was named the “Ahr’s Most Beautiful Wine View” in 2020.
History
Saffenburg is considered the oldest castle ruin in the region. It was destroyed in 1704; restoration of its surviving foundation walls began in 2004. Under Rhineland-Palatinate monument protection law, the ruin is recognized as a cultural monument.
