Culture and History

The parish church in Kesseling has documented origins dating back to 772; its tower dates from the 13th century, while the nave was built in 1791. As early as 762, King Pippin donated the Casleoca monastic cell and a forest to Prüm Abbey. A monastery in Kesseling helped initiate the Christianization of the Ahr-Eifel region. The two-storey rectory below the church is the former provost's residence of Prüm Abbey. The church is a notable attraction because of its Baroque high altar.

The “Steinerberg” AhrSchleife is classified as a difficult hiking route. In Kesseling, it reaches the Hubertus Chapel, descends through juniper heathland to the village, and follows the Kesselinger Bach. Along the section beside the stream, the route passes a small waterfall. The AhrSchleife also passes Kesseling's parish church, the Old Monastery, and the historic rectory. At 531 meters, the Steinerberg is a panoramic hiking destination; from there, trails continue toward the wine villages of the Central Ahr Valley.

The Steinerberghaus at an elevation of 530 meters is described as an inn for active holidaymakers. The Ahr Valley is associated with staffed mountain huts, seasonal wine taverns, and wine bars; these are often run by winegrowers.
