Dernau: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The most scenic section of the Red Wine Trail in the central Ahr region connects the wine villages of Altenahr, Mayschoss, Rech and Dernau. The village lies in a river meadow surrounded by steep vineyard slopes; Pinot Noir and Frühburgunder grapes grow on the steep, rocky terraces along the Ahr. The mild climate of the Ahr Valley, low precipitation and soils consisting of weathering slate support viticulture. Wine and Local Tradition

Visits to wineries and wine tastings can be arranged in Dernau. Between spring and November, wine taverns offer local wines and regional specialities in a relaxed atmosphere. Dernau’s historic winegrowers’ association and viticulture association were founded in 1873.

The history of viticulture in the Ahr Valley can be traced back to the year 770. In 1970, Dernau’s two winegrowers’ cooperatives merged to form the Dernau Winegrowers’ Cooperative, which is now called Dagernova Weinmanufaktur. Dagernova offers red and white wines as well as sparkling wine, including Riesling, Pinot Noir and rosé sparkling wines.

Nature and Trails

The Red Wine Trail runs from Altenahr to Bad Bodendorf for around 35 kilometres, passing through Dernau and Marienthal. The AhrSteig includes a hiking section from Mayschoss to Dernau. As a certified trail around 100 kilometres long, it leads from the source of the Ahr to its mouth and is known along the route for its diversity of nature, natural monuments and cultural heritage.

The observation tower on the Krausberg offers views across the Ahr Valley between Rech and Ahrweiler. In clear weather, the views extend as far as Bonn, Cologne and Cologne Cathedral. A marked route to the Krausberg Tower follows the Ahr Valley Trail, then Trail A9 or 18 via Habichtsblick and a signposted ascent to the tower.

History

The Augustinian convent in Marienthal, within Dernau’s cadastral area, was founded in 1136 and completely rebuilt in 1699. Part of the former government bunker between Dernau and Ahrweiler was converted into a Cold War museum; it opened to the public on 1 March 2008.
