Kirchsahr: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Church of St. Martin in Kirchsahr houses a late-medieval triptych attributed to the Cologne School and dated to around 1400–1408. The central Crucifixion is complemented by 18 additional panels depicting scenes from the life and Passion of Christ; the church also contains a rare Turkish Madonna.

History

A church is believed to have already existed in Kirchsahr around 1105, while the first certain documentary evidence dates from 1302. The small stone church was rebuilt around 1730, and its foundations date back to around 1100. The altarpiece was originally commissioned by the Abbey of Bad Münstereifel and has been on display in the church since 1782. Mining is also part of the local history: this tradition continued in Kirchsahr well into the 20th century.

Nature

The Sahrbach Valley is described as a valley offering views across the heights of the Eifel and insights into the changing character of the valley's natural landscape and its surrounding hills. The Sahrbach Valley hiking paradise has a network of trails approximately 80 kilometres long, extending from Kreuzberg to the state border near Kirchsahr. The 8.6-kilometre Sahrbach Trail is the main route in the Sahrbach Valley hiking area; in total, 19 hiking trails branch off from three main trails there.

Twelve information boards along the Sahrbach Trail explain the flora, fauna, history, crafts and culture of the Sahrbach Valley. The protected wet meadow is one of the highlights along the route. Several former mine tunnels in Kirchsahr provide habitat for bats and other animals. Near Krälingen, the Gottfried Kinkel Trail and the Hasen Trail also offer distant views.

Special Places

At the Gretelstollen, maps show the locations of old mine tunnels and the ores mined in Kirchsahr. The entrance is designed to allow visitors to look into the tunnel; restored mine carts stand in front of the Gretelstollen. The Alte Stollen in Binzenbach is located directly on the Sahrbach Trail and extends approximately 30 metres into the mountain.

The Max Planck Society's radio telescope has a diameter of 100 metres. It was built between 1968 and 1971. From Binzenbach, it can be reached on foot via the Galaxies Trail in approximately 40 minutes; information boards along the Galaxies Trail focus on the universe. In the district of Burgsahr, the Burghaus was once a noble knight's residence that was repeatedly leased to private individuals from 1752 onwards.
