Berg: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Berg is located in the Ahr Mountains, the northern foothills of the Eifel. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Berg can then continue their accommodation search.
Nature
The local Eifel landscape forms a plateau between 250 and 400 metres high. Deeply incised valleys create the impression of a hilly landscape. The central valley is the Vischel Valley, joined by the Gierenbach and Eisbach valleys.
The Vischel Valley between Berg and Freisheim is described as an almost untouched side valley of the Ahr. It is designated as part of the Rhine-Ahr-Eifel Landscape Conservation Area and the Ahr Mountains Special Protection Area for birds. From the ridges of the Ahr Mountains, there are views towards the Rhine Graben, the Siebengebirge and the Ahr.
Hiking
Several long-distance trails lead through the landscape. The Karl Kaufmann Trail runs from Hilberath through the Vischel Valley to Kreuzberg and the Ahr. The Eifel Heights Trail leads from Sinzig to Monschau, branches off westwards in the Vischel Valley and leaves the Berg area at Hochthürmen. Berg is a destination for day hikes.
Wildlife can be observed during peaceful walks through the forests of Berg. Vischel is described as a starting point for hikes to the adjacent private wildlife reserve of Baron von Holzschuher. Vischel Castle stands as a privately used estate on a hill in the Vischel Valley. The road ends at Vischel Castle; to protect nature, no road continues through the Vischel Valley.
The Berg Nature Friends House has 74 beds and overnight accommodation. It offers extensive opportunities for hiking and other outdoor activities.
Culture
The local churches include St Nicholas in Vischel, St Anthony in Berg, St Roch in Freisheim and St Quirinius in Krälingen.
Vischel was first mentioned in 893 in the Prüm Urbar. The Vischel church was built before 1222 in the Romanesque style and renovated in 1773. Vischel Chapel has an original 12th-century structure with a well-preserved nave. The chapel is normally closed and accessible only once a year.
