Heidekreis has miles of signposted routes for cycling, hiking, Nordic walking and horse riding. They lead to worthwhile destinations and offer different ways to spend time outdoors. If you enjoy walking, you can make hiking the focus of your stay; routes for two-wheeled tours are also available. Nordic walking and horse riding are among the options, too.
At 169 metres, Wilseder Berg is the highest elevation in the North German Plain. The surrounding area is almost car-free. Cars can only access car parks via access roads in the villages around the nature reserve; otherwise, people get around on foot or by bicycle. If you include this area in your trip, bear this special traffic situation in mind when choosing your excursions. Wilseder Berg therefore offers a different kind of experience from the leisure activities in the towns of Heidekreis.
History in a range of locations
The German Tank Museum in Munster has more than 150 large exhibits. The exhibition spans five halls covering more than 10,000 square metres. Its size and layout across several halls make a visit to the museum an outing in its own right. Visitors interested in military history and large-scale exhibits will find a clear focus here.
The region’s cultural attractions also reflect its architectural and monastic history. The “Hof der Heidmark” in Bad Fallingbostel was built in 1642, dismantled in 1936 and rebuilt in Liethwald. The listed building is one of the oldest in Heidekreis district. Walsrode Monastery is the oldest of the famous heathland monasteries. Ahlden Castle was built on the Alte Leine in 1579 and is associated with the banishment of Electoral Princess Sophia Dorothea. The Sieben Steinhäuser, Stone Age megalithic tombs, are near Ostenholz. These attractions offer different historical points of reference during a stay—from a rebuilt building and monastic tradition to Stone Age burial sites.
Leisure activities for different interests
Heide Park in Soltau offers something for different age groups: Peppa Pig Land has gentle rides and family entertainment for younger children. The park’s Big 7 include the roller coasters Colossos, Krake and Scream. When planning your outing, you can choose whether to focus on gentler rides or roller coasters.
Buhl Activity Park Walsrode has high ropes courses and an 18-hole footgolf course. For an active day out, you can choose between two different activities: the high ropes courses or footgolf. Another option is Serengeti Park: the safari drive through Serengeti Safari is 10 kilometres long and is done in your own car. If you are looking for a more relaxing contrast to these activities, Soltau-Therme offers relaxation with brine.
