Discover Höpen and the Heath Garden
Höpen lies to the north of Schneverdingen. Its terrain, shaped by the Ice Age, gives the landscape a varied profile and makes the area a local recreation destination. Around 200 different varieties of heather, comprising approximately 200,000 plants, grow in the Schneverdingen Heath Garden. If you are interested in the diversity of heathland, you will find more than just a single landscape view here: the different varieties and the large number of plants make the garden a destination in its own right.
The paths through the Heath Garden are paved. Wheelchair users, people with walkers and visitors with pushchairs can travel or walk around the grounds. The Heath Garden is open to the public and can be visited free of charge. This information is especially useful if you would like to make the garden a specific part of your stay. Guided walks through Höpen and the Heath Garden are also available from April to October and last around two hours.
Trails with a variety of landscapes
The Heath Farmers’ Trail is a circular family route that runs alongside farmland. These fields grow crops of the kind known from the days of traditional heath farming. This gives the trail a different focus from routes through open heathland: here, the cultivated fields and the history of heath farming take centre stage. The Nordic walking routes in Osterheide run through the Lüneburg Heath Nature Reserve. The scenery alternates between open heath, woodland edges and Lake Sylvester. You can choose a route based on whether you prefer open spaces, transitions to woodland or a lake along the way. The trails described here differ in their landscapes and themes, so choose the focus that suits your planned outing.
Heath Blossom Festival and culture
The traditional Heath Blossom Festival in Schneverdingen is a special event in the annual calendar. It takes place every year on the last weekend in August. Traditionally, a Heath Queen is crowned during the festival. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, the last weekend in August is the key date to bear in mind. The festival adds a local tradition to the nature experiences, without requiring you to focus your entire stay on hiking.
Theeshof also offers cultural events: it is a venue for theatre performances, poetry readings and film evenings. The Heimatbund’s spinning and weaving group at Theeshof demonstrates traditional spinning. Visitors can therefore enjoy different kinds of cultural experiences, from performances and readings to an insight into a traditional craft.
Getting here and choosing where to stay
Schneverdingen has a railway station in the town centre and another in the heathland village of Wintermoor. If you are travelling by train, these locations may be useful when finding your way around and looking for a holiday apartment.
In the surrounding area, Schneverdingen’s long-established Kutschen Meyer company offers rides in TÜV-tested carriages through the heathland around Schneverdingen. A carriage ride is another way to experience the landscape.
