The German Military Cemetery at Essel lies two kilometres northeast of Essel in a pine forest, west of State Road 190 between Walsrode and Hanover. It is the resting place of 114 soldiers who fell in the fighting around the Aller crossing from 10 to 12 April 1945; most belonged to Marine Fusilier Battalion 2. The cemetery was dedicated in 1947. Its connection to the Aller crossing links this place of remembrance to a specific chapter of regional history.

The Heidekreis as a broader travel region

The wider Heidekreis destination offers other distinct themes. In Soltau, Heide Park’s Peppa Pig Land has gentle rides and family entertainment for younger children. Cultural history is represented by Walsrode Abbey, the oldest of the famous Lüneburg Heath convents, and Ahlden Castle: it was built in 1579 on the Alte Leine and is associated with the exile of Electoral Princess Sophia Dorothea. For a sense of the landscape, visit Wilseder Berg in the northern Heidekreis. It is 169 metres high and the highest elevation in the North German Plain. The Heidekreis also has kilometres of signposted routes for cycling, hiking, Nordic walking and horse riding.
