The Vissel Lakes in the Centre of Town

The Vissel Lakes are in the centre of Visselhövede, just a few steps from the town centre. There are opportunities for Nordic walking, jogging and strolling. Granaries and Local History Museum

Behind the local history museum is the Visselhof, which consists of historic granaries. These include the honey granary from the district of Buchholz. In 2006, it was dismantled beam by beam, carefully restored and then relocated to this site. Its history therefore includes both its former location in Buchholz and its relocation to Visselhövede. The Visselhof also includes the storage granary from the Harm-Becker farm in Visselhövede. The two granaries represent different places of origin and have different names: the honey granary and the storage granary.

The local history museum also has its own story within the townscape. It is one of the oldest houses in Visselhövede’s oldest street. In 1999, after extensive construction work and careful restoration, it was put to its present use. Together with the historic granaries, it forms a cultural focal point centred on specific buildings and their history.

Architectural History at the Church and Water Tower

St. John’s Church is built of fieldstones in the North German Brick Gothic style. It has a free-standing bell tower, which has existed in its present form since 1799. The church offers a distinct point of connection to the town’s architectural history; the bell tower also provides a precise historical date. Anyone interested in architecture can consider these features alongside the granaries and the local history museum when exploring Visselhövede.

Another historic building is the water tower on the grounds of the former North German Honey and Wax Works. It was built between 1896 and 1899 and initially served the water supply needs of the works and the town. Its history therefore connects the former industrial site with Visselhövede’s water supply. Together with the honey granary, the tower points to the town’s honey and wax history, although the two buildings did not have the same function: the granary is named for honey storage, while the tower was initially intended to supply water.

Experience Visselhövede Around 1900

A historical town tour takes you back to Visselhövede around 1900. The tour guide, Almuth Quehl, portrays the publican’s wife “Minna Dierks.” The tour therefore does more than focus on a historical date: it conveys local history through a character from that era. You can arrange a separate date by appointment. This is a fitting focus for travellers interested not only in the buildings but also in what life in the town used to be like.

Visselhövede lies on the western edge of the Lüneburg Heath. The town can be reached by train and bus: it is on the Bremen–Uelzen railway line, served by Deutsche Bahn.
