Zeven combines monastic history and public art with opportunities for hiking and relaxing. You can shape your stay around cultural discoveries and time in the great outdoors. The changing perspectives are particularly appealing: in town, you’ll encounter historical landmarks and works of art in public spaces, while paths along the Mehde and the NORDPFAD Zevener Geest offer different hiking options.

Art and history in Zeven

The Kloster Zeven Museum brings two special subjects to life: a 500-year-old coin hoard from Heeslingen and Zeven porcelain in the Art Deco style. The municipal gallery, which hosts changing exhibitions, is housed in the Königin-Christinen-Haus in the centre of Zeven. The house was built around 350 years ago and has historic rooms. Talks, concerts and other cultural events are regularly held in a small hall. The programme and individual event dates may change, so check the latest information before visiting. A sculpture garden behind the house offers a place to relax.

St. Viti Church connects local history with a distinctive architectural design: it was built between 1141 and around 1158 in the Romanesque style, with a cruciform floor plan. Its construction accompanied the relocation of the canonesses’ convent from Heeslingen to Zeven; the convent later developed into a Benedictine nunnery. The church’s tall, round tower is also steeped in history: Carl Friedrich Gauss carried out land surveys from there in the 1820s. For orientation, the church is located by the town park, near the bus station and opposite Zeven Town Hall.

Public art and paths in the countryside

Seven sculptures and objects of different shapes and sizes stand in Zeven’s pedestrian zone. Part of an overall concept, they reflect Zeven’s history and are open to public viewing. The walking tour starts at Vitusplatz, at the southern end of the pedestrian zone. The works offer a unique way to explore the town’s history and can be combined in a stroll with visits to the museum and church.

For a longer hike, try the 23-kilometre circular NORDPFAD Zevener Geest trail. It starts either at Zeven bus station or in the Großes Holz recreation area; the Zeven natural swimming pool is right on the route. As route details may change, it’s worth checking the latest route before setting out. For a different kind of walk, take the footpaths through Zeven’s town park and forest, which follow the Mehde to the natural swimming pool. The town park also has a boules court and a fountain where you can relax. You can choose between a longer circular hike and paths through the park and town forest, depending on what you’re looking for.

Before looking for holiday accommodation in Zeven, consider which of these experiences you’d like to include in your days, then choose somewhere to stay based on the places and starting points that matter to your plans.
