Rotenburg (Wümme): City Stream, Culture and Water

A stream beneath the pedestrian zone

The Stadtstreek is 700 metres long and man-made. As it runs through the town, it flows beneath the pedestrian zone—a distinctive feature of the townscape. If you want to explore Rotenburg on foot, the Kulturpfad offers an eight-kilometre route with 35 stops. This offers a different scale from the short stream: here, exploring the town is combined with a longer cultural route.

Heimathaus and town history

The Heimathaus Rotenburg is a Low German timber-framed hall house dating from 1779. Its collection comprises well over 3,000 individual items from Rotenburg and the surrounding area. On one scheduled opening day each month, visitors can see the inside of the house, the exhibitions in the Kübbungen, the Historic Room and the hearth in the Flett. If you would like to see the interiors, check the date in advance for your travel period.

The town church also tells the story of several building phases. In 1648, under Swedish rule, it was moved to its present location; in 1862, it was rebuilt and consecrated in the Neo-Gothic style. The stone tower dates from 1752. In addition to church services, it hosts events, including concerts ranging from Bach to pop and from brass band performances to musicals, with the Rotenburger Musikverein among the performers. If a concert is important to your visit, check the current programme. Another cultural stop is the Kunstturm, considered probably the smallest art museum in Germany.

Swimming and sauna at Ronolulu

The Ronolulu leisure pool has more than 11 pools and water attractions, including an 84-metre water slide. The Ronolulu SPA offers a 600-square-metre sauna area, a Finnish sauna, a log-cabin sauna, a sanarium, a steam room and three relaxation rooms. There is also a small sauna garden and a 34 °C brine pool. The swimming and sauna facilities offer a different focus from the cultural sites, with options for a stay centred on water and relaxation. Town trails and regional tours

The approximately 20-kilometre NORDPFAD Rotenburger Wasserreich starts at the town hall and passes directly by the Heimathaus. Together with the eight-kilometre Kulturpfad, this lets you choose between a shorter town route with 35 stops and a longer trail with a direct connection to the Heimathaus. The distances provide a guide for planning your day, but do not indicate how long the walks will take.

The wider Rotenburg travel destination offers further regional options. The 24 NORDPFADE trails in Rotenburg (Wümme) district are circular hiking routes ranging from five to 32 kilometres. The Wümme Cycle Route is another regional option: it is an approximately 250-kilometre circular route that follows the Wümme more or less closely. The northern route is approximately 125 kilometres long and the southern route approximately 135 kilometres; cross-connections divide them into individual sections that are also suitable for day trips and families. Alongside the town’s cultural and water-based activities, the region’s hiking and cycling routes offer a separate focus.
