Hiking through the Geest landscape

The NORDPFAD Kuhbach-Oste trail runs through gently rolling Geest and alongside the narrow Kuhbach stream. The stream flows into the natural Oste river. The German Hiking Association has awarded the trail the designation “Quality Trail TRAUMTOUR – Hiking Germany.” With a little luck, you can spot kingfishers, grey wagtails and demoiselle damselflies along the Oste. If you enjoy spending time outdoors, you’ll find both a landscape to hike through and special opportunities to observe the wildlife along the river.

The trail also passes the Kuhbachtal burial mound. It is one of several burial mounds in the Kuhbach’s estuary area and adds a historical dimension to the nature experience. The wooden artwork “The Lovers” by Ragna Reusch is also located along the NORDPFAD. When planning your visit, please note that the wooden sculptures are not accessible to people with limited mobility.

Kuhmühlen and the history of the mill

In the Kuhmühlen recreational area, the mill pond and the historic half-timbered ensemble of the former mill and estate complex form the heart of the site. The former watermill has a history stretching back more than 500 years. The pond and half-timbered buildings give an impression of how the site was shaped by its former use. If, alongside hiking, you’re interested in historic places on your trip, Kuhmühlen offers a different focus from the open Geest and the natural setting along the Oste.

Experiences with different focuses

An alpaca walk with Alpakafreunde mit Herz takes about 60 to 90 minutes and follows a section of the NORDPFAD. For families, it’s important to take the age requirements into account when planning: children aged 4 to 11 need to be accompanied by a supervisor. You must be at least 10 years old to lead an animal on your own. This information can help you decide whether the activity is suitable for the children in your travel group.

Another place to visit on an outing in nature is the “Hohe Buchen” information station in Groß Meckelsen. It has information boards about the forest, a tree telephone and a rest area. This means that, in addition to hiking, learning and taking a break are also options for your holiday activities.

Village life and regional cuisine

Every autumn, the active village youth of Groß Meckelsen organise their own harvest festival. If you’re in the village at that time, you can include this seasonal event in your travel plans. For regional produce, there’s Lüddens SB-Hofladen, a self-service farm shop offering eggs, potatoes, seasonal vegetables, sausages, honey, jams, aronia juices and spreads. The range also includes pasta made from eggs produced on the farm.
