A castle stood on the site of today’s campsite between 1344 and 1352; it burned down in 1775. The signposted hiking trails around Lauenbrück pass, among other places, the old castle island, where the campsite is now located. They also run past numerous ponds and lakes, as well as the floodplains of the Wümme and Fintau rivers. The trails therefore offer both traces of local history and a variety of landscape views.

Northeast of Lauenbrück, in the Rotenburg (Wümme) district, lies the Kinderberg and Stellbachniederung nature reserve. It covers around 261 hectares. The protected area adds a named natural landscape close to the town to the options for exploring the countryside.

Church Art and a Distinctive Altar

In Lauenbrück’s St. Martin Luther’s Church, the Baroque altar depicts the Crucifixion and the Resurrection. It is clearly visible from every seat. The church is open to visitors daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; check the opening hours before your visit.

LandPark: Animals, Breeds and Nature Experiences

More than 200 wild and domestic animals live at LandPark Lauenbrück. Many of the breeds represented are at risk of extinction. The park is dedicated, among other things, to preserving old domestic animal breeds and offering a holistic approach to nature experiences. It is especially interesting for families with children who value these topics alongside the opportunity to see the animals.

Getting There and Excursions Across the Wider Destination

Lauenbrück railway station is about 2.2 kilometres from the starting point of the NORDPFAD Wümme and Vareler Heide trail at LandPark. Check distance and transport information before setting out.

The wider Rotenburg destination offers further hiking and cycling options. The 24 NORDPFADE trails in the Rotenburg (Wümme) district are circular walking routes between 5 and 32 kilometres long. The NORDPFAD Ostetal passes through one of northern Germany’s most beautiful natural river landscapes, with dense floodplain forests, wet meadows, reed beds and steep slopes.

The Wümme Cycle Route also offers a different perspective on the Rotenburg destination: it comprises a northern route of about 125 kilometres and a southern route of about 135 kilometres. Connecting routes divide the cycle route into attractive individual sections, which are also suitable for day trips and families. Another natural area, the Tister Bauernmoor together with the Ekelmoor, forms a 1,220-hectare nature reserve complex in the Rotenburg (Wümme) district.
