Hellwege between the Wümme, meadows and village history
Accommodation in Hellwege
The Wümme flows through a broad meadow lowland; a hiking trail runs along the north bank, where you can enjoy the quiet of the lowland beneath the willows. There is also a nature trail, cycle paths and a cultural scene featuring concerts. Hellwege thus offers several starting points for a trip that combines nature, outdoor activities and village history.
The Wümme Lowlands and Hellweger Holz
The landscape along the Wümme is shaped by its broad meadow lowland. On the north bank, a hiking trail leads through this setting. If you enjoy walking, you can include it in your trip as a way to explore nature; the river landscape itself gives the village a different character from Hellwege’s historical and cultural attractions.
Hellweger Holz lies south of Hellwege. Black woodpeckers, great spotted woodpeckers, green woodpeckers and nuthatches live in its old beech trees. For bird enthusiasts, the combination of old beech trees and these four named species is a distinct focus. Alongside the open lowland, the old trees and their birdlife also come into view.
On foot or by bike
The Hellweger Wümmewiesen nature trail is about 1.5 kilometres long. Its topics range from habitats, white storks and migratory fish to the ecological continuity of flowing waters and plant identification. The subjects span wildlife, aquatic ecology and plants, offering different points of interest for anyone interested in nature.
The cycling routes described differ mainly in their length and range. The approximately 250-kilometre Wümme long-distance cycle route runs from the Lüneburg Heath to the Weser. The approximately 60-kilometre Wümme cycle route through the Wümme lowlands is one section of it and passes through Hellwege, among other places. The options therefore range from the shorter section through the lowland to the long route connecting the heath and the Weser.
Concerts and cultural history
Concerts have been held for many years at the Hellwege Local History and Culture Centre. The programme includes classical music, jazz, singer-songwriter performances, choirs and solo instrumentalists. The Hellwege house music event has also been held annually for many years at the Local History and Culture Centre on the Sunday after Easter. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the date for the year you wish to visit.
Weser-Wümme Airfield is another local attraction: it is home to the AIRBUS Flugsportgruppe Bremen e.V. The municipality of Hellwege describes it as a family airfield and a place offering recreational opportunities for visitors. This description by the municipality adds to the picture of a village whose attractions range from nature and cycling to culture and air sports.
Village history and Mühlenhof
The old village stood on the field known by the field name “Dat Ole Dörp” until the 12th century. The name thus recalls an earlier settlement at this site and gives the landscape a historical dimension.
Mühlenhof Hellwege is an ensemble of four buildings: two are historic, and two are newly built in the style of historic buildings. The ensemble includes a wood-fired bread oven, a mill, a granary and a wagon shed. The distinction between historic buildings and new buildings modelled on historic ones is part of its description, as are its four components.
Choose the right focus for your trip
When looking for a holiday apartment in Hellwege, your preferred focus can help you decide. If you would like to include cycling, you can choose between the Wümme routes of different lengths; the hiking trail and nature trail offer other ways to explore nature. Concerts and house music events also add a cultural date to your plans.
