Crafts and history at the Meyerhof

The Scheeßel Local History Museum includes the Heimathaus and Meyerhof grounds in the centre of town and is one of the oldest museums in Lower Saxony. At the Meyerhof, the focus is on blue printing, weaving, spinning and blacksmithing. Blue printing has been part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2018. Volunteer staff make textile products for their own use; during courses, events and guided tours, visitors can watch them at work.

One of the Meyerhof’s buildings also tells a story of its origins: a sheep barn from Hamersen was rebuilt there in 1985 after being dismantled in Hamersen. The barn houses a modern museum education workshop for working with school classes and as part of holiday programmes for pupils. In this way, the buildings, crafts and museum offer insight into different aspects of the local cultural heritage.

The watermill adds a long history of ownership and use to this historic site. It has belonged to the Müller (-Scheeßel) family at its current location since 1507. It remained in operation until the 1970s and has been a museum mill since 2003. Those exploring Scheeßel’s history can appreciate the mill as a distinct part of the Meyerhof, rather than seeing it merely as a backdrop to the crafts.

Church, festival and regional experiences

Inside St. Lucas Church, visitors are greeted by lavish furnishings and abundant gold decoration in the style of North German rural Baroque. From April to September, the church is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. As opening hours are important for planning your visit, it is advisable to check them again beforehand.

There is also a useful local connection for travelling to a specific event: Scheeßel railway station is just a few minutes’ walk from the Hurricane Festival site. If the festival is the main focus of your trip, you can take this short walk between the station and the festival grounds into account when finding your way around.

A bike tour through the municipality of Scheeßel could include a stop at a Melkhus, where you can sample various milk-based treats. Such a visit can be arranged on request.

The cycle routes and moorland therefore appeal to different travel interests than Scheeßel’s cultural attractions.
