Obernholz is located in the north of the Gifhorn district in Lower Saxony and belongs to the Hankensbüttel joint municipality. The municipality comprises the villages of Bottendorf, Schweimke, Steimke, Wentorf, Wettendorf and Wierstorf.
The River Ise flows east of Wentorf. It forms the boundary between Obernholz and the town of Wittingen.
The villages of Obernholz have been predominantly Protestant since the Reformation, and none of them has a church. The Isenhagen Cistercian convent is located in the immediate vicinity of Obernholz.
