Brome Castle was first documented in 1203. Brome is designated as a market town and includes the localities of Altendorf, Benitz, Wiswedel and Zicherie. Since 1979, the castle has been used as a museum of local history; it presents rural self-sufficiency and traditional crafts in the Brome region.
Culture
Since 1981, Brome Castle Museum has been the centrepiece of the annual castle festival held in mid-August. It offers practical demonstrations of traditional crafts, including forging iron and driving wooden nails into shoes. The workshops are furnished as authentically as possible and supplemented by information terminals, videos and photographs.
The museum also includes a castle garden with culinary, medicinal, dye and aromatic plants, as well as early vegetable varieties. The Church of Our Lady in Brome was rebuilt in 1842 in the Neoclassical style.
Nature
Lake Ohre-See in Brome consists of two lakes covering an area of 4.8 hectares and offers opportunities for fishing. The Ohre and the Ohre lakes are ecological landscape elements within Brome; they serve as ecological stepping stones and movement corridors for many animal and plant species. The areas involved in developing nature experiences at the Ohremühlengraben and renaturalising the Brome mill ponds belong to the “Ohretal near Altendorf” landscape conservation area.
Things to Do
During an excursion to the Ohre in Brome, visitors can observe fish from the fish observation platform; the Ohre excursion also includes a picnic opportunity. The path along the adventure stations and around the lakes is approximately 2 kilometres long. Equipment for collecting and identifying aquatic organisms can be borrowed by small and larger groups from Brome Town Hall for a small deposit.
Brome outdoor swimming pool is closed for the 2026 season.
Cycling
The cycle route in the Ohre floodplain was created as part of the “Green Belt Ohre” nature conservation project and presents the Ohre as part of the Green Belt. The route passes through Brome.
