Nature

Sassenburg is located on the edge of the Lüneburg Heath. Sassenburg’s recreational landscape includes forests, heathland, moorland and waterways. The municipality has an extensive network of hiking trails for recreation.

Neudorf-Platendorf is still known as a moorland settlement and has Lower Saxony’s longest straight village thoroughfare.

Visitors can observe peat extraction in the Großer Moor. The Moorbahn offers an approximately 2.5-hour exploration ride on a narrow-gauge track through Sassenburg’s moorland. It starts and ends in Westerbeck at Im Hagen. The covered passenger cars travel at 6 km/h into the Großes Moor area and back. Along the way, the Moorbahn explains how peat is extracted and how flora and fauna have adapted to the conditions of the moor. From a Moorbahn stop, a boardwalk leads to a renaturation basin and a peat-cutting site.

There is a viewing platform at NABU’s renaturation and sphagnum moss basins.

Water

Lake Bernsteinsee is located in Sassenburg-Stüde on the Elbe Lateral Canal, in a landscape of forests, heathland and moorland. Swimming, water skiing, wakeboarding and stand-up paddleboarding are possible at Lake Bernsteinsee.

Cycling

The Großer Sassenburg circular route connects all of Sassenburg’s localities. It runs through the Großes Moor nature reserve near Charlottenhof.
