The Schnuckenheide is significant for the study of nature and local history because it is considered a remnant of a form of land use that was once widespread throughout Lower Saxony. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Dedelstorf can then continue searching for accommodation.

Nature

In the Schnuckenheide nature reserve, visitors are asked to stay on the paths and keep dogs on a lead. The mosaic of habitats in the Schnuckenheide provides a habitat for numerous endangered plant and animal species.

The Repke Schnuckenheide is a heathland area of approximately eight hectares between Repke and Hankensbüttel. It includes juniper heath and beehives. For many years, it was maintained by a flock of Heidschnucke sheep and has also been rejuvenated using modern methods.

The nature reserve consists predominantly of dry, nutrient-poor sandy soils covered with heath. Smaller areas consist of juniper, birch, dry scrub and matgrass.

History and Culture

The Dedelstorf Site Heritage Building presents excerpts from the 60-year history of the former Richthofen Barracks. The exhibition is housed in a staff building at this former barracks, comprises 15 rooms and is supervised by soldiers who were stationed there.

The exhibition includes documents relating to displaced persons from Latvia and Lithuania; some of these displaced persons were issued new papers in Dedelstorf. The exhibition also features reconstructed scenes from an office, a telephone exchange and a detention cell associated with the former military site.

The former Richthofen Barracks in Dedelstorf is the venue for the traditional annual meeting of the Dedelstorf Site Heritage Association.
