Vordorf, Rethen and Eickhorst are described as three of the oldest settlements in the Gifhorn district. Vordorf is documented for the year 1022, and Rethen for 1301. Eickhorst was first documented in 1007 under the name “Hechorst”. A Neolithic burial site approximately 5,000 years old was also found in the area around Rethen. Those wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Vordorf can then continue their accommodation search.
The megalithic tomb in Rethen is listed as an individual monument, dates to the Middle Neolithic and is of historical significance. The remains have been made accessible to visitors and the monument opened to the public. An information pillar at the megalithic tomb in Rethen was inaugurated in July 2000.
The St. Nicolai Church in Rethen also preserves several historical traces. The present nave was built in 1901 based on a design by Eduard Wendebourg; the tower may date from the 13th or 14th century. The pulpit from the former church, bearing the coat of arms of the Lords of Rethen, has also been preserved. Part of the gallery parapet of the former church bears names and a year. The choir contains a stained-glass window depicting Christ as the Judge of the World. Rethener village life adds individual events to the cultural offerings in Rethen.
Hiking is promoted in the Gifhorn district on numerous themed trails and nature study paths. The district includes heathlands, forests, moors, rivers, lakes and the Drömling UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The Südheide Gifhorn combines heath, moorland and water landscapes with signposted cycling routes and hikes through nature.
The Eickenhof’s product range includes asparagus, geese, strawberries, raspberries, tulip bulbs and cut tulips. Since 2007, six farming families from Papenteich have organized the cultivation and marketing of Eickenhof products.
