Culture and Local History

A group of small farmers’ houses built after the fire of 1790 is the reason Ummern was added to the list of artistic monuments of the former district of Celle in 1970. The Thölke inn is the oldest business still operating in Ummern. The first shooting festival in Ummern took place in 1707.

Landscape

Ummern’s 120-metre-high telecommunications tower was built in 1970/72 and is a visible landmark. The natural spring Herzogsbrunnen is located near Ummern. The local airfield lies on the edge of the Südheide near Ummern and offers gliding on weekends from March to October in good weather.

Nature

The Südheide is predominantly flat and has themed cycling routes as well as nature trails. It also offers walks through heathland, meadows, fields and forests.

Regional Cuisine and Agriculture

Ummern’s agricultural landscape includes grain, potatoes, sugar beet and dairy farming; at the same time, maize cultivation is increasing. Regional specialities of the Südheide include asparagus, blueberries and Lüneburg Heath potatoes.
