Meine was first documented in 1007 under the name Meynum. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Meine can then continue their accommodation search.

History

Initially, agriculture was the main influence on the locality. Later, Meine developed into a rural industrial and commercial area. The Papenteich sugar factory in Meine was inaugurated in November 1883 and closed at the end of the 1980s due to economic constraints.

A little under 90,000 square metres of industrial ruins remained in the centre of Meine on the former factory site. The municipality acquired the former factory site with the aim of creating a more attractive town centre. A mill is considered a landmark of Meine. Meine has had a railway station since 1890; in 1993, it was converted into a stopping point.

Nature

The Zuckersee lake in Meine is a recreation and leisure facility. The Sauteich recreation area is located in Grassel. Among the villages in the municipality, Gravenhorst and Ohnhorst have preserved their particularly distinctive rural character.

Geographical Setting

Gifhorn district combines heathland, forests, moors, rivers, lakes and the Drömling UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The district has numerous themed hiking trails and nature paths.

Gifhorn district has around 700 kilometres of recreational cycle routes and around 550 kilometres of everyday cycling connections. The cycle network has around 400 signposted nodes for route planning. Themed routes in the district include the Heide Tour, Durch die Büttelei, Wittingen Tour and Mills Tour.

Culture

In the vicinity of Meine, the International Windmill Museum Gifhorn presents historic mills from several countries as well as traditional crafts. It includes 13 full-size mills from around the world. The Mills Tour starts at the Lady Devorgilla Mill in Gifhorn, continues to the Windmill Museum and the Wahrenholz watermill, and returns to Gifhorn.

Regional foods associated with Gifhorn district include asparagus, blueberries, Heidschnucke sheep and heath potatoes.
