Waldeck-Frankenberg: Beech Forests, Half-Timbered Houses and Nature Experiences
Accommodation in Waldeck-Frankenberg
Waldeck-Frankenberg offers nature experiences, cultural sites and active pursuits with a wide range of focuses: from ancient beech forests in a UNESCO World Heritage site to limestone history and half-timbered houses. When planning your trip, you can first consider whether forests and outdoor activities or exhibitions and local history should shape your holiday. Some attractions combine knowledge about nature with group activities, while others focus on their own historical themes.

Experience Forests and Wilderness
The ancient beech forests of Kellerwald-Edersee National Park have been part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage since 2011. This forest is a special highlight for anyone interested in natural landscapes. One way to explore the area on foot is the 66-kilometre Urwaldsteig Edersee trail.
The trail can be hiked in eight stages or as part of a three-day ranger-guided hike, with daily stages of around 22 kilometres. This gives you two specific ways to plan your tour: divide it into eight stages or take the three-day hike with its roughly equal-length daily sections. If hiking is to shape your holiday, this distinction is a useful starting point for planning your trip.
In Vöhl-Herzhausen on Lake Edersee, the Kellerwald National Park Centre has an interactive exhibition featuring displays about the wilderness of the Kellerwald. There is also a 4D film that engages the senses and explores the wilderness and its wildlife. At the Edersee Wildlife Park, the animals themselves take centre stage: native and formerly native wild animals live in spacious, natural enclosures. Information boards, a flight display and educational activities provide insights into the animals.
Limestone, Half-Timbered Houses and History
At the GeoFoyer Kalkturm Korbach, two very different timescales meet. The exhibition presents the landscape and wildlife around Korbach 250 million years ago, while also explaining how limestone is extracted and processed, as well as its industrial use in the quarry for more than 100 years. The story ranges from the distant past of the Earth to the more recent use of this raw material.
In Frankenberg (Eder) stands the Historic Town Hall, a half-timbered town hall dating from 1509. Its ten towers represent the town’s ten guilds. The Landfrauen farmers’ market is held every Saturday in the town hall’s Rathausschirn. If you plan to visit the market, it is best to check the date before you travel.
Another historic stop is Landau Castle, the Waldeck counts’ castle in Landau’s old town. In 1290, an old castle was converted into a palace. Together with Korbach’s limestone history and Frankenberg’s town hall, it illustrates the variety of cultural themes in Waldeck-Frankenberg.
Active Pursuits and Different Holiday Focuses
The Allendorf (Eder) Multigenerational Park covers around 3,000 square metres and offers 28 activity stations that encourage different generations to be active and connect with one another. Exercise and socialising go hand in hand here. The same park is also home to the “Im Ried” dirt bike facility, with trails of varying difficulty and a pump track. It opened in October 2017. The park therefore offers both a multigenerational activity area and a dedicated option for dirt bike riders.
The Willingen Skywalk offers a very different experience: it is 665 metres long and suspended 100 metres above the Upland landscape. Its length and height make it a striking example of an experience that differs from hiking trails, exhibitions and local history.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Waldeck-Frankenberg, you can use these experiences to guide you towards the kind of holiday you want: multi-day hikes, learning about nature, local history or physical activity. Consider which themes matter most to you and your fellow travellers, and take these priorities into account when choosing a location. This way, your search for accommodation begins with a clear idea of how you want to spend your days.
