Town Hall, Towers and Medieval Architecture

Construction of the third Town Hall began in 1509, and it was intended to resemble a predecessor that had burned down. The late Gothic building, with its ten towers, stands in the old town between Liebfrauenkirche and Steinhaus. Look up to admire the brackets, which support the central bay windows on the south, north and west sides and are considered masterpieces of medieval woodcarving.

Built in the 13th century, the Hexenturm is the only surviving one of the 20 towers that originally formed Frankenberg’s town fortifications. Around 50 steps lead to the platform at its top. Liebfrauenkirche also tells the story of the town’s long building history: its present-day structure dates from 1286 onwards. The late Gothic Marienkapelle is accessible only from the outside. The former St. Georgenberg monastery now houses the Museum im Kloster Frankenberg.

Town Trails, Market and Outdoor Experiences

The premium Frankenberger Blickwinkel town walking trail is a circular route of around nine kilometres. It links the town’s sights with experiences in nature, offering a different focus from a visit devoted mainly to historic buildings. At Frankenberg Wildlife Park, you can see wild boar, deer, sheep and goats up close. Admission is free, and the park is open around the clock every day.

Another regular Saturday-morning destination is the Landfrauenmarkt (Rural Women’s Market), held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon in the Schirn of the ten-towered Historic Town Hall. The Town Hall carillon was installed in 1999 and can be heard daily between 11:45 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. If you want to plan your visit around the market or the carillon, check the times in advance.

Ederberglandbad comprises an indoor swimming pool and an outdoor pool, and is close to the Teichgelände recreation centre. Near Frankenberg-Rodenbach, at the entrance to the Hohenäcker quarry, there is an information pavilion and a fossil-hammering site for children. Bring a hammer or similar tool. Alongside historic sights, you can therefore choose from experiences in nature and activities with a specific focus on discovery.

The Kellerwald National Park Centre in Vöhl-Herzhausen on Lake Eder features an interactive exhibition with exhibits on the wilderness of the Kellerwald, as well as a 4D sensory film about the wilderness and its wildlife. The GeoFoyer Kalkturm Korbach offers a different way to explore the region: it presents the landscape and wildlife around Korbach as they were 250 million years ago, and also explores the extraction and processing of limestone and its industrial use in the quarry for over 100 years.
