Experience the forest: nature trail and mountain bike trails
Four mountain bike trails run through the forests between Diemelstadt’s districts of Rhoden, Wrexen and Orpethal. They are each 1.6 to 4 kilometres long and designed for all ages and skill levels. Check the current trail conditions before setting out.
The Rhodener Hude forest nature trail offers a different perspective: it illustrates the distinctive features of Diemelstadt’s forests in the Rhodener Hude protected landscape area. The area is characterised by heathland and juniper. This means that a designated nature trail and four cycling routes of specified lengths offer different ways to spend time in the forest.
The Quast and Eichholz Muschelkalk area is also one of the region’s natural attractions and is a Natura 2000 site designated under the Habitats Directive. Quast is rich in index fossils from the Ice Age. The landscape, plant life and geological finds each offer a different way to explore the surroundings.
Half-timbered houses and local history
Rhoden has a medieval old town with Diemel-Saxon half-timbered ensembles dating from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The Forest Work Museum is also located here. Following its relocation, it opened on 20 May 2026. One of the museum’s main topics is the history of Germany’s oldest forestry school, from its founding in 1932 to its closure. The monthly opening schedule may change; check it before your visit.
In Wrexen, the local history museum explores the town’s history and notable figures, as well as crafts such as weaving and stonemasonry. One of its topics is papermaking, past and present. The exhibits also include panels illustrating events such as the cattle market and marksmen’s festival, everyday objects and a general store. Visits are by appointment only.
The other townscapes also reveal history in different forms. Helmighausen is a traditional farming village with surviving half-timbered remains and a medieval church nave. An artistically designed Baroque entrance portal at the former moated castle is worth seeing. Wethen has some well-preserved 19th-century half-timbered houses. The old town hall, with its tithe barn, was built on the foundations of an old castle complex.
The Pickhardshammer complex includes a Diemel-region half-timbered building dating from 1692; Pickhardshammer is a former iron forge. Further afield from Wethen, to the west of the village, lies Gaulskopf. There, an early medieval fortification is still clearly visible. Finds from Gaulskopf have been classified as Neolithic.
