Discover Willersdorf: Church, countryside and views of Knebelsrod
Accommodation in Willersdorf
Willersdorf is in the Ederbergland holiday region. The Kaltes Wasser stream, a tributary of the Nemphe, flows through the village; on a hike to Knebelsrod, you can look out from Willersdorf towards its viewing platform. The village also has a rich settlement history and a church with remarkable architectural features. When choosing a holiday apartment, this combination of countryside, hiking and village history can be a useful starting point.
Countryside and settlement history
Willersdorf was probably founded as a small forest-clearing settlement as early as the 9th century, amid woodland and rolling hills on the Burgwald’s north-easternmost edge. The village was first mentioned in a document on 24 July 1294 under the name Wilhartisdorf. Willersdorf was resettled in the 16th century and has been continuously inhabited ever since. The recorded dates mark out different chapters in the village’s history, from its presumed early settlement to its later resettlement.
The landscape can also be understood through specific local features. Kaltes Wasser is more than just the name of a stream: it flows through Willersdorf and joins the Nemphe as a tributary. Together with the woodland and rolling hills of the Burgwald, this watercourse shapes the village’s setting.
Church and historical traces
The Protestant Church in Willersdorf is regarded as the village’s landmark and is listed as a cultural monument in the monument register of the state of Hesse. The church, which collapsed in 1975, left behind a red sandstone portal with a moulded round arch. The portal bears the date “Anno 1724” and is a striking architectural record of the local church’s history.
The interior also contains elements from earlier churches: the pulpit and organ come from predecessor buildings; the organ was built in 1879. The dated portal and the surviving fittings point to different periods of construction and use. The church’s story cannot be reduced to a single date: its surviving features tell of several chapters in Willersdorf’s history.
Hiking and getting around the village
The hike to Knebelsrod is a good reason to consider Willersdorf as a starting point for exploring the countryside. From Willersdorf, you can look towards Knebelsrod’s viewing platform.
Two transport connections are also noted for getting around the village: Kreisstraße 99 runs through Willersdorf between Oberholzhausen and Bottendorf. Public transport is provided by a call-and-collect taxi service. If you plan to rely on this service for your journey, check the service details before setting off.
Frankenberg (Eder) as a wider travel destination
In the wider travel destination of Frankenberg (Eder), the Historic Town Hall is a distinctive architectural highlight. The town’s landmark is a half-timbered town hall with ten turrets. Construction of the third town hall began in 1509, with the intention of making it resemble a predecessor building that had burned down. On the south, north and west sides, carved brackets, also known as consoles, support the central oriels; they are considered masterpieces of medieval woodcarving.
For a combination of town sightseeing and nature, the Frankenberger Blickwinkel premium urban hiking trail is described there: this circular route of around nine kilometres combines town sights with experiences in nature. At Frankenberg Wildlife Park, visitors can see wild boar, deer, sheep and goats up close; admission is free. The former Cistercian convent of St. Georgenberg is now home to the Museum in the Frankenberg Monastery.
These different themes can help you choose the right place to focus on for your trip.
