From Battenberg’s market square, the Burgbergstollen visitor mine is a five-minute walk away, on the slope of Burgberg. The 150-year-old tunnels and shafts can be visited wearing protective clothing and carrying a mine lamp, under the guidance of experienced mine guides. Kellerburg can only be reached on foot; several hiking trails lead to Kellerburgturm on Battenberg’s Burgberg. The viewing platform is reached by climbing 88 steps. In good weather, the view extends as far as the Marburg Lahnberge, Kahler Asten and Hoher Lohr. These offer two clearly different experiences to choose from: a guided tour underground or a walk up to the viewpoint.
Neuburg, gardens and local history
Neuburg in Battenberg (Eder) was built in 1732 by Chief Forester Karl Johann Philipp Löner von Laurenburg and served as Landgrave Ludwig VIII’s hunting lodge until 1768. The Baroque garden at Neuburg covers around 2,700 square metres and is divided into several terraces. The history of the building and its use meets a distinctly structured garden layout here.
The local history museum in Battenberg’s district of Laisa offers another perspective on the past. It illustrates village life in the last quarter of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, focusing on the crafts practised in Laisa around the turn of the century. The weekly farmers’ market, organised by the local rural women’s association, takes place at Rathausschirn every Saturday; check the dates before your trip. The Kellerwald National Park Centre in Vöhl-Herzhausen on Lake Edersee has an interactive exhibition featuring displays about the Kellerwald wilderness, as well as a 4D sensory film about the wilderness and its wildlife.
Allendorf (Eder) Multi-Generation Park covers an area of around 3,000 square metres, with 28 stations for activities and communication across generations. The “Im Ried” dirt-bike facility in the park includes trails of varying difficulty and a pump track; it opened in October 2017.
