Hiking, Cycling and the Eder Bridge

In addition to the long-distance Kellerwaldsteig and Urwaldsteig trails, the municipality of Vöhl offers almost 50 signposted hiking trails. This means there are plenty of route options in addition to the two named long-distance trails. The best way to decide which route suits your plans is to check the current route and signposting, as both may change.

Cyclists will also find a distinctive landscape: a quality cycling route awarded four stars runs through the Vöhl municipal area from Ederbringhausen, following the Eder past green meadows and fields. It is not the same as the hiking trails, but offers its own way to experience the landscape by bike.

The 60-metre-long Eder Bridge near Alt-Asel has four arches and is considered the best-preserved structure in the old Eder valley. When the water level of the Edersee falls, it is the first structure to emerge. Its appearance therefore depends on the water level; if the bridge is the main focus of your visit, take this into account when planning.

Watching Bats in Vöhl-Asel

The bat nature trail in Vöhl-Asel combines interactive stations with clearly signposted information. The site also includes a bat exhibition in an old transformer station. Infrared cameras inside offer live views into a maternity roost. The exhibition thus supplements the information along the trail with insights into the lives of bats.

If you would like to learn about bats in ways beyond the trail stations, you can watch them there in the evening: observations with a bat detector and night-vision device are possible by prior registration. Registration is required for this activity. This is a different focus from a daytime hike, so check in advance when registration for bat watching is available.

Building History in Vöhl

The former Vöhl synagogue was built as a simple half-timbered structure in 1827 and inaugurated in 1829. Today, the building serves as a venue for concerts, lectures and commemorative events. Its architecture and use combine a glimpse into the building’s history with a place for cultural encounters. If you are planning to attend a particular concert, lecture or commemorative event, check the current dates.

Another historical thread leads to Hessenstein Castle. It was built in the 14th century on the medieval trade route from Frankfurt to Hamburg and became the first youth hostel in Hesse in 1922. These two dates give the castle a clear historical context: its origins in the Middle Ages and its later significance in the history of youth hostels in Hesse. This does not imply that interior visits are possible today.

Another Highlight in Marienhagen

The Marienhagen outdoor swimming pool has a heated 10 × 25-metre pool. It also has separate areas for non-swimmers and swimmers, as well as an additional lane section separated off for swimmers. The pool and its layout offer a different focus from the hiking and cultural attractions. Current opening hours and prices are not provided here.

Waldeck-Frankenberg as a Wider Destination

In the wider destination of Waldeck-Frankenberg, the 66-kilometre Urwaldsteig Edersee offers two different ways to plan your time: it can be hiked in eight stages or as part of a three-day ranger hike, with each stage covering around 22 kilometres. This comparison helps you estimate the time required: one option divides the route into eight stages, while the other is planned as a three-day ranger hike.
