Hiking trails with different highlights

The Franzosenwiesen Tour is a 19.2-kilometre premium hiking trail in the low mountain range around Rosenthal. It passes through woodland meadows and moorland and alongside streams. Its natural landscape includes the “Franzosenwiesen,” a nature reserve that is home to numerous endangered plant and animal species. The tour starts at the Seegerteichhütte near Rosenthal. The Rodaer Straße bus stop in Rosenthal is listed as 500 metres away; there is a car park at the hut. This means that both a bus stop and a car park serve as practical landmarks for finding your way at the starting point.

A shorter alternative is the Wild Rose Trail: this mostly paved circular route is 2.6 kilometres long and is suitable for a walk at any time of year, for young and old alike. Around 60 different rose varieties can be seen along the trail, including about 40 wild rose varieties and their hybrids. The Wild Rose Trail is also home to the “Rosenmärchen” nature experience area, with various play and rest facilities. The route length, roses and places to rest give this outing a different focus from the considerably longer Franzosenwiesen Tour.

Nature around Rosenthal

The “Merzhäuser Teiche” nature reserve lies close to the destination. It covers about 20 hectares; 128 bird species have been observed there to date, including 57 breeding species. The area is also of interest to visitors who want to observe local birdlife as well as go hiking.

There are other hiking trails around Rosenthal, and the Burgwald has a total of 103 kilometres of well-signposted hiking trails. When choosing an activity for the day, you can therefore distinguish between specific trails in the town and the more extensive network in the Burgwald. The distances given for each tour can help you assess the planned hike without conflating routes with different destinations and itineraries.

Discover boundary stones and history outdoors

Several trails explore the history of historic boundary stones, each following its own route. The South-East Boundary Stone Trail runs from the “Dreiländerstein” at the south-eastern tip of Rosenthal’s municipal forest along the municipal and district boundary to the Krimmelbachgrund in the “Merzhäuser Teiche” nature reserve. Over six kilometres, it takes in other historic boundary stones and their historical background.

The historic boundary stone trail in the north-east and south of Rosenthal is 14 kilometres long. Of this, 7.5 kilometres make up the historic section, which follows a prehistoric ridgeway and the Rhine-Weser watershed. It is also possible to follow boundary stones continuously for just over 17 kilometres, from the “Böddeberg” above Willersdorf to the “Alten Wetterweg” ridge in the Rosenthal municipal area. Visitors particularly interested in boundary lines and their history will find several clearly distinct route options.

Culture in town

The Protestant church in Rosenthal stands near the market square. For historical, artistic and urban-planning reasons, it is listed as a cultural monument in the heritage register of the State of Hesse. Its location near the market square makes it an easy-to-identify part of the townscape.

The small school museum at the Alte Schule Rosenthal offers another glimpse into the town’s history. It has been housed in the left-hand classroom since 2010 and brings the history of the former school to life again. Please contact the museum in advance to arrange a visit. This lets you plan a cultural visit while the hiking trails reveal another side of Rosenthal.
