Nature trails with a variety of themes

The Benninger Ried is easy to explore on foot. Its own nature trail and an observation platform provide specific stops along the way. If you prefer to explore nature on a designated discovery trail, Bad Grönenbach has a 3.2-kilometre forest discovery trail that introduces visitors to the forest ecosystem. Its length is a helpful guide for planning your day, but does not indicate how long the walk takes or how difficult it is.

The Buxheim Forest Discovery Trail offers a different kind of route: stretching 2.7 kilometres, it loops around Buxheim Pond and is designed to let visitors experience nature with all their senses. In the Bannwald forest in Ottobeuren, eleven stations guide visitors along another forest discovery trail. There are several specific nature themes to choose from: a nature trail with a viewpoint, a circular route by the pond or a path with stations in the forest. Cycling and hiking trails throughout the district are also marked uniformly; Unterallgäu is also home to the Glückswege (Paths of Happiness).

Architectural landmarks and Kneipp resorts

Those interested in architecture can visit the Baroque basilica in Ottobeuren, one of Unterallgäu’s notable architectural landmarks. In Kirchheim in Schwaben, Fugger Castle features the world-famous Cedar Hall. The former Imperial Charterhouse in Buxheim is known for its choir stalls. Mindelburg Castle in Mindelheim is another notable architectural landmark.

The accessibility of Mindelburg Castle can also be factored into your plans: the castle courtyard is open year-round. The keep, which has been converted into an observation tower, is open from April to October. In Ottobeuren, the Sebastian Kneipp Museum is dedicated to the life and work of the famous priest. More than 2,000 exhibits tell his story in the east wing of the monastery. As a Kneipp resort, Ottobeuren is, along with the Kneipp health resort of Bad Wörishofen, one of the places especially suited to a trip focused on Kneipp.

Regional cuisine and planning your trip

The Culinary Mile takes place twice a year in Bad Wörishofen: in spring and autumn. Freshly prepared dishes are offered at numerous tasting stands. If you would like to combine your trip with such a culinary event, bear the two stated seasons in mind when planning; this does not specify a future event date.

There are several ways to reach the area when planning your journey and choosing a place to stay: Unterallgäu is located on the A7 and A96 motorways, with a dense road network and rail connections providing additional links. The Allgäu Airport in Memmingerberg is another option.
