Textiles, Craftsmanship and Town History
The Mindelheim Textile Museum opened in 1986 to present Prof. Hilda Sandtner’s collections to the public. Since 2016, the second floor of the former Jesuit college has displayed textiles, fine artistic needlework and valuable fabrics, among other things. At interactive stations, visitors can test their crafting skills. A museum visit therefore focuses both on the works on display and on trying things out for yourself—an engaging introduction to textile art and craftsmanship.
The Frundsberg Festival also features prominently in Mindelheim’s events calendar: held for ten days every three years, it commemorates the town’s former ruler, Georg von Frundsberg (1473–1528), and attracts more than 50,000 visitors every three years. Its multi-day format sets the festival apart from a short, one-off event. A Castle and Routes with Different Character
Mindelburg Castle, also known as Schloss St. Georgenberg, stands above the Mindel Valley. The keep has been converted into a viewing tower and is open from April to October. A visit therefore combines historical insights with views from the tower; the guided tour of the grounds and the seasonally accessible viewing tower are two specific ways to get to know the castle.
For exercise in the surrounding countryside, the Mindelheim Glückstaler Loop follows in the footsteps of the nobility and is accompanied by an audio guide. The Crescentia Pilgrimage Trail is quite different: at almost 90 kilometres long, it is a circular route from Kaufbeuren via Ottobeuren and Mindelheim back to its starting point.
