A Parish Church with Layers from Different Eras

The Evangelical Lutheran parish church was built after 1450 by the Möttelin rulers and the local community. Its location points to an even earlier history: four predecessor churches stood north of the present church. Excavations confirmed their existence in 1959. Documents from the later 14th century also mention an Upper Castle on Kellerberg and a Lower Castle, the Schlößle. These names add two differently designated castle sites to the picture of historic Woringen.

A landmark date in the church’s history is 6 December 1532: on that day, the first Protestant service was held in the parish church, formerly dedicated to St Mary. The furnishings also reflect different periods. The tower spire is Gothic and probably dates from the time the present church was built. Its brightly glazed roof tiles give it a distinctive appearance.

In 1968, frescoes were uncovered in the choir. They are dated to 1490–1500 and attributed to the Strigel workshop. The Baroque pulpit is one of the oldest in the district; Johann Friedrich Sichelbein I painted it in 1661. The Neo-Gothic altar, dating from 1892, adds a later touch and comes from the Vogt art-carving workshop in Memmingen. The frescoes, pulpit and altar make the church a place where visitors can see different chapters of art history side by side.

The Agricultural Nature Trail and Outdoor Sports

The Woringen agricultural nature trail is about five kilometres long and marked with a green tree symbol. Three dairy farms can be visited along the route; advance registration is required. During visits, you can learn about animal husbandry and feeding. This is a way to combine an interest in agriculture with a walk along the trail. Its length provides a useful guide when planning your day.

You can find more opportunities for exercise at various locations throughout the municipality. Three sand courts belonging to the tennis club are located at the edge of the forest; check locally for current availability before visiting. The recreation area by the sports ground includes football, skating, beach volleyball and hockey areas, as well as a bocce court. Training for beginners and advanced players is offered on the beach volleyball court on Wednesdays. If you plan to attend, check locally in advance to see whether the session is taking place.
