Haßberge: Hiking, Landscapes and Castles

Circular Trails, Long-Distance Hiking Trails and E-Bike Tours

The Erlebnis Touren (experience tours) in the Haßberge Nature Park are designed as half-day or full-day excursions and follow circular routes back to the starting point. This offers a different way to discover the landscape from travelling along a long-distance hiking trail. On the “Burgen & Schlösser Qualitätswanderweg” (Castles & Palaces Quality Hiking Trail), you can experience nature on foot in the German Castle Corner. The Castles & Palaces Hiking Trail is a 190-kilometre long-distance hiking route through the German Castle Corner.

Another long route is the Celtic Adventure Trail: it covers 254 eventful kilometres from the Werra via the Gleichberge and the Haßberge through the Steigerwald to the Aischgrund. The Amtsbotenweg runs across the Haßberge ridge, from Altenstein to Königsberg. These different types of hiking routes can help you choose a holiday apartment: consider whether you would prefer to focus your trip on circular trails that return to the starting point or on a longer route.

There is also a dedicated themed offering for cyclists: the Haßberge Nature Park has 23 new e-bike themed tours. If you would rather explore a village and its cultural landscape on foot, Fatschenbrunn is home to the European Cultural Route “Hutzeldorf.” This approximately 6-kilometre circular trail is explained by information boards and leaflets about the village and its cultural landscape. Its approximate length and accompanying information give this trail a different focus from the longer hiking routes.

Castles, Views and Regional History

The Haßberge tell their story in many different ways. Bettenburg is considered a landmark of the region. The Schwedenschanze is a ring-wall fortification dating from the Hallstatt period; the Schwedenschanze observation tower stands on a 487 m-high summit of the Haßberge ridge. From there, the view stretches over mixed forest to the Grabfeld and to the distant heights of the Rhön in the northwest and Thuringia in the north. The Wallburg of Eltmann, in turn, is the ruin of a spur castle and a viewpoint on the site of the former keep.

The Altenstein Castle Information Centre is the centrepiece of the German Castle Corner and highlights castles, castle ruins and palaces in the Haßberge. Its attractions include an armoury with medieval knight’s armour and weapons, as well as a fictional excavation site with an adjoining research laboratory. The railway museum at Hofheim station focuses not on castles, but on the history and technology of the Haßfurt-Hofheim local railway. Registration is required to visit the interior; visits are by appointment at 0 95 23 / 13 05.

Village Culture and Franconian Wine

Fatschenbrunn is known for “Hutzeln”: pears are dried there using an age-old tradition to make delicious dried fruit. Another culinary discovery is a hike through the Abt-Degen wine valley, which can be combined with Franconian wine at the many wine taverns and wine bars.
