The S 1 hiking trail, “Around the Old Main,” is about 4 km long and follows almost exactly the same route as the Obermain Anglers’ Association’s aquatic nature trail. The trail introduces visitors to the animal and plant life in and around the water. This links a specific walking route with an experience that focuses on life by the water.

The 40-hectare quarry lake in Sand am Main offers opportunities for camping. Play areas and sunbathing lawns complement the options for swimming, stand-up paddleboarding, boating and fishing. Since autumn 2015, the wines of Weingut A & E Rippstein have been available in a wine shop set up on the ground floor of the Rippstein family home. From there, you can see the press house and a vineyard belonging to the estate. Check the current public access arrangements before visiting.

Mathias Rippstein is also involved in winemaking: he turns grapes from the Himmelsbühl vineyards into wine in the press house and in ageing rooms accessible at ground level. Tasting and production are therefore two different points of interest for anyone interested in wine.

At several basket-making businesses in Sand am Main, you can learn about the techniques and history of basket-making. There is also a historical connection at Hermannsberg near Sand: sandstone was increasingly quarried there from the mid-18th century onwards.
