Burgpreppach Castle is a late Baroque building and a former moated castle. It stands in the middle of the village and was probably built between 1716 and 1730. Before that, a moated fortress dating from around 1525 stood on this site. Jewish history and remembrance

From 1681, Burgpreppach was the rabbinical seat of the Oberländer/Grabfeld Jewish communities. In 1875, Abraham Hirsch founded a Talmud Torah school with a boarding house here. Male Jewish students received preparatory training there to become religious teachers; the school closed in 1938. Burgpreppach had a Jewish religious community until 1940. These dates tell the story of an important part of local history, but also of its violent rupture: during the Nazi regime, 79 of the Jews living in Burgpreppach were murdered.

Several memorials keep this history present in the village. A memorial stele in Wassergasse commemorates deported Jewish children who once lived there. A memorial stone was erected in remembrance of the Jewish religious community. The area’s earlier history also includes the fact that, in 1708, the ruling authorities granted the Jews a field on the road to Eichelberg for use as a burial ground. The historical story thus extends from the former community and its institutions to places of remembrance.
