Between the Main Riverbank and the Old Town

Haßfurt lies directly on the northern bank of the Main. There are several ways to discover the town: a walk through the old town’s winding lanes leads past historic houses and offers views of the Main. Along the way, you’ll find secluded corners and traces of the past. If you enjoy wandering through a town and taking in its architectural history, you can make this walk a focus of your stay.

The layout of the old town also tells the story of how it developed. Its originally elongated rectangular shape is still recognisable; it is crossed by the broad main street and bounded by two large town towers. The contrast between broad and narrow spaces offers a tangible way to take in the townscape: on one side is the spacious main street, on the other the winding network of lanes. In this way, finding your way around the town goes hand in hand with discovering its historic form.

Town Hall and Architectural History

One striking building links historical use with cultural life today: the former prince-bishop’s tithe barn was built in the 15th century and has served as the town hall since 1988. Today, it hosts conferences, concerts and cultural events, and has significance beyond the region. For your travel plans, it offers a cultural perspective different from a walk through the lanes: Haßfurt is shaped not only by its historic buildings, but also by the events held in the town hall.

The Old Town Hall was built between 1514 and 1516 on the site of an earlier building. The late Gothic Knight’s Chapel is regarded as Haßfurt’s landmark. Its building history is marked by two separate dates: the choir’s foundation stone was laid around 1390, and the nave’s in 1431.

Church Art and Insights into Architectural History

Those interested in religious art will find several points of interest in Haßfurt. The late Gothic parish church on the market square houses valuable works by Tilman Riemenschneider, including John the Baptist, Mary with the Child, and the Franconian Apostles. The St. Michael’s Chapel Documentation Centre complements this with church furnishings from the Historicist period, architectural history drawings, and exhibits from the Knight’s Chapel and the parish church.

The Documentation Centre also explores the redesign of the neighbouring Knight’s Chapel under the direction of Karl Alexander Heideloff (1789–1865). The drawings and exhibits offer another perspective on the history of the buildings and their furnishings. Together with the town hall, the former tithe barn and the Knight’s Chapel, they make for a cultural programme to suit different interests: you can focus on local history, architecture or the works of art on display.

Cycle Route, Train Station and Excursions

Haßfurt is also a useful stopping point for a cycling trip: on the Main Cycle Route through the Haßberge, the town is a place to stop for a break along the way. Haßfurt is also one of the towns with a train station along this section of the route.

The Burgenwinkel Express offers another way to explore the area. It runs from Haßfurt past castles, ruins and palaces—including Altenstein Castle Ruins with its castle information centre—to the medieval town of Ebern. This gives you a route featuring historic sights to choose from, alongside a walk through the old town or a break along the cycle route. During your stay in Haßfurt, you can decide whether to focus on exploring the town itself, make the Main Cycle Route part of your trip, or centre your plans on excursions along the castle route.
