Winegrowing has been a tradition in the Ludwigsburg district for centuries. More than 150 wineries, over 2,000 hectares of planted vineyards and six winegrowers’ cooperatives shape this regional specialty. Terraced steep vineyard slopes are part of the landscape along the Neckar and Enz rivers. If you enjoy learning more about winegrowing and winemaking on holiday, there are several trails with different themes to explore.
The approximately 4-kilometre Wunnenstein Wine Experience Trail combines 60 illustrated information boards with viewpoints. Restaurants, seating areas, barbecue spots and Wengertschützen huts are located along the route. The circular trail on the Geigersberg is shorter, at 1.9 kilometres: its information boards cover nature and wine culture, and rest areas complement the route. In Mundelsheim, the Käsbergkeller Wine Experience Trail features four interactive stations. They cover the structure of the grapevine, winemaking, seasonal work in the vineyards and animals in the vineyards.
Celtic Times and Baroque Culture
There are also different ways to discover the region’s history. The Celtic Trail links nine significant Celtic-era finds along a route of about 35 kilometres through the district. The Keltenweg-AR app brings the nine sites to life with interactive VR and AR elements. At the Hochdorf/Enz Celtic Museum, a lavish burial chamber reconstructed true to the original offers insights into the everyday life and craftsmanship of early Celtic people. This lets you compare a tour of the archaeological sites with a museum visit as a cultural interest in its own right.

The Milchsäules circular trail is 12.5 kilometres long. It runs from Enzweihingen to Hochdorf along forest and field paths and through orchards. A longer hiking option is the 15.4-kilometre circular trail at Rosswager Halde: it starts and ends in Vaihingen an der Enz and passes through the steep vineyard slopes of Rosswager Halde. The two routes differ both in length and in the landscapes described.
There are also cycling routes for different levels of ambition. The Jubilee Cycle Route is 162 kilometres long and passes through 21 municipalities in the Ludwigsburg district. The Metter Cycle Route, just under 29 kilometres long, runs between Sternenfels-Diefenbach and Bietigheim-Bissingen, passing vineyard slopes, orchards, stream valleys and shady forests. Hilltop sofas and benches invite you to stop along the way and enjoy the views. The Neckar Valley Cycle Route is virtually flat and runs steadily downhill. The long-distance route, around 350 kilometres long, is also considered suitable for beginner cyclists and families with children; in the Ludwigsburg district, it passes some of the finest vineyard views along the steep slopes.
The Enz Valley Cycle Route, a little over 100 kilometres long, runs from the source of the Enz near Enzklösterle to its confluence with the Neckar in Walheim. Highlights in the Ludwigsburg district include Kaltenstein Castle in Vaihingen an der Enz, the terraced steep vineyard slopes along the river, and Besigheim, named the most beautiful wine town in 2010.
