Walheim Between Vineyards and Roman History
Accommodation in Walheim
Terraced vineyards on the steep slopes along the banks of the Neckar and Enz shape Walheim’s landscape: a large part consists of these steep, terraced hillsides. There is also a Roman House, whose exhibition is centered around a ruin, as well as courses on the water. These different themes give your travel plans a clear focus: Would you mainly like to experience vineyard scenery, discover Roman history, or plan an active day?

Roman History at the Walheim Roman House
At the Roman House, the ruin of a substantial Roman strip house is at the center of the exhibition. The building was excavated here around 35 years ago. Numerous original finds provide an overview of the impressive trading house and its surroundings. A virtual tour of the building complements the exhibition and offers another way to explore this subject.
The ruin, artifacts, and tour each offer a different perspective: you can view the Roman house as a building while also learning more about its surroundings. This allows you to tailor your visit to your own interests, whether you are particularly interested in archaeological finds or looking for an engaging introduction to the Roman past.
Group tours are generally available year-round, including outside the stated opening hours. Book a tour in advance. The Roman House is listed as open Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays from 2 to 6 p.m.; check these times before you arrive.
Steep Slopes and a Day on the Water
The terraced vineyards are part of Walheim’s landscape. If you enjoy combining different activities during your stay, you can complement the views of the hillsides with a visit to the Roman House. The two themes offer different perspectives: viticulture and a landscape shaped by steep slopes on the one hand, and the history of a Roman trading house on the other.
Spending time on the water is another idea for a day out: Rock-The-River offers one-day intensive courses in kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddling. If you plan to take a course, confirm availability directly with the provider. This lets you plan your trip around whether culture, scenery, or a day of lessons will be the main focus.
The mix of activities you want from your trip can help guide your choice of a holiday apartment in Walheim. Consider which of the themes mentioned interests you most and what you would like to focus on in your holiday plans. The local exhibition, vineyard landscape, and course offerings provide different starting points, without every trip needing to follow the same itinerary.
More to Explore in the Wider Ludwigsburg Travel Destination
The wider Ludwigsburg travel destination offers more than Walheim’s own attractions. The district is set in the Neckar Valley between the Stromberg, Strohgäu, and Löwenstein Mountains. For a different historical focus, the Celts’ Trail links nine significant Celtic-era finds along a route of about 35 kilometers through the district.
The Celtic theme also includes the Hochdorf/Enz Celtic Museum, with a lavish burial chamber of a Celtic prince faithfully reconstructed from the original. It offers insights into the everyday life and crafts of early Celtic people. The Celts’ Trail AR app brings the nine archaeological sites to life with interactive VR and AR elements. The wider Ludwigsburg travel destination therefore offers other archaeological themes in addition to Walheim’s Roman history.
Those wishing to explore viticulture in the wider Ludwigsburg travel destination further can follow the approximately four-kilometer Wine Experience Trail at Wunnenstein. Its 60 illustrated information boards cover winegrowing and winemaking; the route also passes viewpoints, restaurants, seating areas, barbecue spots, and Wengertschützen huts. These regional options are suggestions in their own right within the wider Ludwigsburg travel destination and are not features of Walheim.
