A walking trail or a longer cycling route?

The Green Belt is an information and walking trail that passes through the districts of Korntal, Münchingen and Kallenberg. The 5.5-kilometre route runs past fields and along the edge of the Seewald forest. Information boards share facts about nature, the landscape, forests and agriculture. The walk is estimated to take about two and a half hours. This makes the Green Belt easy to plan as a standalone activity, combining exercise with topics relating to the surrounding area.

The Glems Mill Trail covers a much greater distance: this signposted regional cycling route is just under 36 kilometres long and runs from Glemseck near Leonberg via Ditzingen, Korntal-Münchingen, Hemmingen and Schwieberdingen to Markgröningen-Unterriexingen. Along this scenic and varied route, you can discover 18 historic mills. The two routes therefore offer different experiences: the Green Belt is a walking trail with an estimated duration, while the Glems Mill Trail is a longer cycling route with mills as a recurring theme. Discover Münchingen’s local history

The local history museum is housed in the former old schoolhouse. Its carefully furnished rooms from times past include a classroom, the grandparents’ bedroom, and the workshops of a blacksmith and a cartwright. These examples illustrate different aspects of everyday life in the past: learning and living spaces sit alongside the workshops of two trades. Anyone interested in local history can get a concrete impression of the rooms and activities featured in the exhibition.

A QR-code-based historic walking tour also leads visitors through Münchingen, taking them past numerous historic buildings and sites. As individual QR materials may change, it is a good idea to check the current tour information in advance. The Münchingen Spitalhof adds another perspective on the past: it was first mentioned in a document in 1278 as an estate belonging to Esslingen’s St. Catherine’s Hospital, and is one of the oldest surviving complexes in Münchingen’s historic centre.

The Protestant St. John’s Church is a landmark in Münchingen that can be seen from far away. The choir contains several tombs and tombstones belonging to Münchingen’s local nobility, including art-historically significant epitaphs by Leonberg stonemason Jeremias Schwarz, dating from the late 16th to the early 17th century. Another historic building is the listed Hengelhaus, whose history dates back to before the Thirty Years’ War. Münchingen Town Hall, meanwhile, is one of the most beautiful and imposing half-timbered houses in the district of Ludwigsburg.

Local traditions and planning the right holiday

The bakehouse on Hintere Gasse is home to a special community tradition. It is the only one of Münchingen’s former three bakehouses that is still in working order; local residents can bake bread and other treats there themselves.
