In the 11th century, the Benedictine nuns' priory of Lavilledieu was founded in Saint-Martin-de-Bayssac.
Culture and History
The cloister of the former Benedictine monastery of Lavilledieu is still visible today. The present-day church of Lavilledieu was built in 1828. The Église Saint-Martin features a square Romanesque bell tower with two levels and paired arched windows. The town's economic history has also been documented: silkworm farming brought economic prosperity to Lavilledieu until the end of the 19th century.
Fortifications and Archaeology
The medieval fortification of Lavilledieu formed a quadrilateral measuring 150 × 120 metres with eight monumental towers. The surviving section of Lavilledieu's old fortification, which the inhabitants call Barry, consists of four towers.
The Camp de César is a 12-hectare rectangular fortified site associated with the Gallo-Roman settlement in the Lavilledieu area. The collapsed dry-stone wall of the Camp de César is 5.40 metres wide and 950 metres long. The Oppidum de Jastres-Sud is located in Devois-Communal in Lavilledieu. Jastres-Sud is an enclosure of almost 13 hectares on the plateau, protected by a rectangular defensive wall.
