History and Townscape

The historic centre of Ruoms is a medieval village founded near a Cluniac abbey at the end of the 10th century. The old fortification walls around the centre were built in the 14th century from Ruoms stone and river pebbles. Today, the Notre-Dame-des-Pommiers chapel and its enclosure remain as remnants of the nearby Cluniac abbey.

Wine and Crafts

Néovinum in Ruoms is the wine discovery centre of Vignerons Ardéchois. Visitors can enjoy an informative and entertaining wine experience there, followed by tasting workshops. The 45-minute immersive experience, accompanied by “WineWoman”, takes visitors into the world of Vignerons Ardéchois and explains the journey of the grape from the vineyard to the glass. The experience includes a tasting room and a biodiversity garden.

Another facet of the town is showcased by SYGMA in Ruoms, where introductory sessions and glassblowing courses are offered, allowing visitors to create their own pieces. The air-conditioned boutique also provides a view of the workshop.

Nature and Trails

In the ZNIEFF area “Vallées de l'Ardèche et de la Ligne aux environs de Ruoms”, limestone gorges alternate with broad alluvial plains. This creates a great diversity of habitats, flora and fauna. The area covers the municipality of Ruoms and almost 35 kilometres of river courses.

The challenging “A la rencontre de deux eaux” hiking loop is 16.9 kilometres long and starts at an information point next to the Ruoms tourist office. The loop is marked in white and yellow as a PR trail and cannot be walked during high water because it crosses the Ligne.

For cycling, the Via Ardèche is available: a fully secured, 25-kilometre-long cycle path between Vogüé and Grospierres that makes it possible to discover Ruoms by bike.

Routes through the Landscape

The Défilés de Ruoms tourist route runs along the D4 towards Largentière and was carved into the rock in the 19th century. It passes through a series of tunnels and vaulted passages before entering a deep gorge above the Ardèche and the Ligne.
