Nature
Rocher de Sampzon is 381 metres high, has the characteristic silhouette of a sloping plateau and serves as a natural viewpoint. In clear weather, it offers a unique panorama that contrasts with the narrow, damp and wooded Cirque de l’Aiguille, a limestone cliff more than 50 metres high.
The old village of Sampzon lies on the northern flank of Rocher de Sampzon at an altitude of 300 metres and towers more than 200 metres above the Ardèche.
Water
Plage de Sampzon on the Ardèche is a freely accessible bathing area on a river. It is located on private property, while its management and water-quality checks are carried out entirely by the public authorities. Swimming at Plage de Sampzon is unsupervised and takes place entirely at the users’ own risk.
The annual classification of bathing water quality at Plage de Sampzon was excellent at the end of 2025.
Paths
The greenway Via Ardèche runs through Sampzon and partly follows the former Le Teil–Alès railway line. From Ruoms, the Via Ardèche is connected to Vallon Pont d’Arc by a route for soft mobility.
Culture and History
The Church of Saint Martin in Sampzon was originally built in the 11th century as a Romanesque chapel. Château de Bastide in Sampzon is a residential building dating from the 12th century, with a square, battlemented tower and two round towers.
Geographical Location
Sampzon lies on the right bank of the Ardèche, south of its confluence with the Chassezac. Sampzon shares the confluence with the municipality of Saint-Alban-Auriolles, located to the north.
